HOW ARE INDIVIDUAL INCENTIVE TRAVEL AWARDS COMMONLY USED?

In many ways! Individual incentive travel awards are effective in driving performance improvement in a wide variety of incentive and recognition programs, involving both sales and non-sales personnel.

Recognizing the motivational power of travel, individual travel awards are commonly used to recognize performance and achieve pre-determined goals with programs for sales incentives (direct and channel), employee productivity, recruitment, and retention/turnover reduction. WHAT IS THE TYPICAL CAMPAIGN PERIOD FOR PROGRAMS USING INDIVIDUAL TRAVEL AWARDS?

Unlike group travel programs, there is no “typical” length for incentive campaigns using individual travel awards. It’s very flexible! A campaign may be for an entire year, such as with sales incentive programs. Or, it may be much shorter, as in these examples:

  • An ongoing campaign that is run quarterly, with new targets and objectives every 90 days
  • A 30-day “spurt” program to boost interest and increase activity mid-way through a longer incentive program
  • An ongoing “spot reward” program offering immediate recognition for a job well done.

WHY OFFER INDIVIDUAL TRAVEL AWARDS INSTEAD OF A GROUP TRAVEL AWARD?

There are many reasons! For incentive and recognition programs, studies show that a travel experience is more effective — and has a longer-lasting effect on behavioral change — than either cash or merchandise. But … individual travel incentives may be more effective than a group travel incentive, because they meet the specific needs of today’s society – a desire for more choice, flexibility, personalization, and customization.

Today individual travel awards also are offered as a positive alternative to a group travel award when participants can’t travel on the group travel dates, or when the corporate sponsor wishes to avoid the media scrutiny of a group incentive travel program.

Award Redemption

HOW DO THE TRAVELAWARDSONLINE EXPERIENCE AND CRUISE CARDS WORK?

The TravelAwardsOnline Experience and Cruise Cards are the monetary vehicle used with the TravelAwardsOnline catalog. Each card carries a unique 19-digit redemption number that reflects the dollar value associated with it.

The value on the TravelAwardsOnline Experience and Cruise Cards is completely open-ended. Any dollar amount may be associated with the card’s redemption number. This allows its use in tiered incentive programs (e.g. $500, $1,000, $2,500 or $5,000), or for recognizing ad hoc individual performance or service. The program sponsor determines the value to be associated with each TravelAwardsOnline Cards.

To redeem the value on a TravelAwardsOnline Card, the card recipient …

  • Browses the TravelAwardsOnline Web-based catalog,
  • Enters the unique redemption number into the shopping cart, and
  • Redeems an award selection from over 40 travel categories — from accommodations, cruises, air travel and rental car to adventure travel, sports, action experiences, pre-packaged travel, live entertainment, spas, and dining.

At checkout, the value of the award selection is debited real-time from the card. The card has no expiration date — any unredeemed value remains on the card for later redemptions.

As an added benefit … if the cost of a desired experience is greater than the value of the TravelAwardsOnline Cards, individuals may pay the balance with a personal credit card.

DO THE TRAVEL AWARDS HAVE ANY EXPIRATION DATES?

The expiration dates on travel gift cards, paper certificates and electronically-fulfilled awards vary by travel supplier. A few, like gift cards from Marriott and Ritz-Carlton, and paper certificates from Celebrity Cruise Lines and Fairmont Hotels & Resorts, have no expiration date. Other awards are valid for a specific number of months following their issuance by the supplier. Examples are: American Airlines Incentive Flight Certificates – 12 months; The Ritz-Carlton, Marriott and Hyatt paper certificates – 15 months; Carnival, Norwegian Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean cruise awards – 18 months.
